Bonus! A fire!!!

I forgot to write about what happened Saturday evening just before dinner. This one might not translate well but ill give it a go. During this time of year burning brush is normal and a must,  it needs to be done before things get super dry. We have seen some fires around and had been asking questions so we knew it was normal. We were all sitting around just before dinner and we all saw quite a big fire right behind the common bathrooms near our dining area. At first glance I thought “no big deal” but upon a closer look I realized it looked much bigger than I had seen before. It was also after dark and nobody was around except the group (not even Scott). I ran towards the fire to see if I might find someone there.  Right behind me came Dena. As soon as I saw how big the fire was and that nobody was there tending to it I started hollering for Scott. I got no response. The generator had just kicked on so I thought maybe I would find him there near  there. I ran there again yelling for Scott. As I ran down the path I began to see more and more fires lit around the property. Next to Scott would be James the head cook so again I ran to the kitchen yelling for James. By this time Lynn also was a flutter about the fires. James ran with me to the fire and I started asking if it was ok. At first he said yes, but then he began pulling green leafy limbs off of tress and attempting to beat the fire out. This led me to believe it maybe wasn’t ok. The fire was hot and burning fast through the tall grass. To us it looked as if there was no chance it would stop on its own. James also began saying he didn’t know who would have lit it. Realizing the fire was to big for him to handle he gave up. I went back to the bar again looking for Scott. No luck. I called him on my cellphone and he answered. Turns out he had lit the fires and it was nothing to worry about. I let him know that when there are visitors in the village he should let them know before he does that again. He had frightened us. He apologized, chuckled and hung up. Now knowing the fires were lit on purpose and by Scott a few of us wandered down the path to see all of them. There were more than ten spots all lighting up the night and all a blaze. Sai went with us and we walked and walked in awe of all the flames. After a few minutes Sai says “we should go now because the snakes will be seeking refuge out of the bush”….um that’s all I needed to hear. Me in my flip flops took off running down the dirt path in the  dark. I was clearly not dressed for snakes so for me the night time show was over! Heart pounding and back to eat dinner I went….fearful of snakes for the rest of the evening. Add that to the list of reasons I couldn’t fall asleep!
